i'm back! (and more emo than ever)

hi! welcome back to my blog! to avoid redundancy, i'll skip the sorry i've been gone for so long statement that i make at the beginning of every new entry. in the time i've been gone, i've been accumulating some new obsessions to share with you! aren't i the nicest? my first real post on this blog was all about my current favorites, and i'm happy to share that i am once again blessing you with my questionable taste. here's four things i've had on my mind for the weeks i've been away...

1.  you are jeff - richard siken

like many other things i love, this poem was introduced to me by mia. she sent me the link, telling me she couldn't stop thinking about it, and soon i, too, was struck with richard siken's genius. sound dramatic? i don't care. this poem makes me feel like the wistful, pensive, movie character i secretly wish i was. siken is a master at what he does—his writing feels so familiar and casual, yet never amateur. in this piece, he taps into universal feelings through these beautiful and haunting hyper-specific situations. here's an excerpt from my favorite stanza:

"someone had a party while you were sleeping but you weren’t really sleeping, you were sick, and parts of you were burning, and you couldn’t move. perhaps the party was in your honor. you can’t remember. it seems the phone was ringing in the dream you were having but there’s no proof. a dish in the sink that might be yours, some clothes on the floor that might belong to someone else. when was the last time you found yourself looking out of this window. hey! this is a beautiful window! this is a beautiful view! 1 hose trees lined up like that, and the way the stars are spinning over them like that, spinning in the air like that, like wrenches."

WOW right?? while researching siken's book crush, i found a goodreads review that perfectly sums up my thoughts:

"it’s fitting that this book is called crush with how it crushes you and then you’re left lying on your bed at 3am wondering who you were before you knew these words. in other words, it was fucking amazing." — @ellie

2. my chemical romance

if you know anything about me, it's that i have yet to be released from the jaws of my middle school emo phase. while this used to be something i met with shame, i've been trying to come to terms with the fact that i love the emo scene...and with that comes a newfound love for an old favorite—my chemical romance. back in the good old days (aka 2015) i was quick to favor fall out boy or panic! at the disco, but lately i just can't get enough of mcr. maybe it's the rising trend of mall goth fashion, maybe it's a desperate attempt at reclaiming 12 year old claire. either way, i am no longer ashamed of my emo tendencies. a couple of months ago, i found a CD of three cheers for sweet revenge in a thrift store, and i'd be lying if i said it wasn't my favorite thing to drive around to. if you haven't heard this album, do yourself a favor and listen to it now. even if you've never heard it before, nostalgia practically leaks from this album, with the exaggerated angst that characterized the early 2000s scene.

the makeup! the dramatics! the joy division shirt on mikey! all iconic.

and for any mcr fans wondering...the best tracks are the jetset life is gonna kill you, cemetery drive, and the ghost of you. i refuse to debate this.

3.  marc jacobs' heaven collection

i can't remember exactly when i became aware of this marc jacobs project, but i've been obsessed with its pieces for what feels like forever. i'm no fashion expert, (forgive my cluelessness) but in my opinion, jacobs struck gold with heaven. as many high fashion brands fall out of favor with younger generations, heaven appeals to late 90's futurism, borrowing elements from both street style and the harajuku staple, fruits magazine. i have yet to buy anything from this collection—it isn't exactly cheap—but my current favorites are the psychedelic knit hat, superstar knit, double-headed teddy tee, and knit mini with gloves.

check out the rest of the collection here!

4. ubermorgen and clickistan

amid all the controversies and discourse of NFT's, it's become increasingly difficult to take refuge in the digital art i once loved. how tragic must it be, to find that your favorite hacker artist isn't as ethical as you once thought! luckily, ubermorgen's work has given me all the amusement i need. described as media hackers, software artists, and conceptual designers, ubermorgen was actually something i found by accident, the result of a feverish search for a different digital piece i had come across years ago. the members, married couple lizvlx and hans bernhard, are masters of subversion, using a digital space to point out the irony of capitalism, right-wing conspiracies, and beauty standards. clickistan, my favorite piece by them, was commissioned by the whitney museum back in 2010, and serves as both an interactive game and fundraiser. clickistan combines pixelated entertainment and surrealism to create something equal measures thought-provoking and fun. play the game here!

as much as i'd love to stay and wax poetic about marc jacobs, crush, and my embarrassing love for mikey way, i ought to close this post now. unfortunately, even esteemed blog celebrities like me have schoolwork to complete. </3 i hope you enjoyed my list of current favs! stay tuned for some entries on APAH, video essays, and middle school (assuming i am no longer plagued by writer's block...) bye!!
